Tom Crown Cup Mute For Trumpet (30TCUP)
Aluminum Cup Mute by Tom Crown.

Cup mutes are commonly used by trumpet players of all levels – student, intermediate, and professional.

The cup mute you select should have good overall intonation. It should be playable in all registers and should have good response at any dynamic level. Tom Crown mutes are designed to provide all this and they have the characteristic muted sound you should come to expect in a quality-made product.

Cup mutes tend to be in tune or slightly flat, depending on the mute, the trumpet, and the player. The cup should be relatively close to the bell, about 1/8" to 1/4" of an opening, depending on the softness and the “cup” sound desired. Some mutes have an adjustable cup; however, Tom Crown Cup Mutes are designed to be permanently adjusted – customized – by sanding down the corks a little at a time to achieve the right fit inside your trumpet bell.

Tom Crown Straight Trumpet Mute For Soft Orchestral Passages (30TAA)
The Straight Trumpet Mute For Soft Orchestral Passages

Straight mutes, along with cup and wah-wah, are one of the most common mutes used by trumpet players of all levels – student, intermediate, and professional.

The Model A (30TAA) is Tom Crown's copy of the Magosy-Buscher Non Pareil straight mute. Like all Tom Crown mutes, the Model A is designed to have good intonation, to be playable in all registers, to have good response at all dynamic levels and to have a characteristic muted sound.

Tom Crown straight mutes are designed to fit most Bb or C trumpet bells. The mute should be playable to the low F-sharp. If the low register does not respond, the corks should be sanded down gradually until the low F-sharp responds. Because Bb trumpets can play a whole tone lower than the C trumpet, corks on a Bb trumpet mute have to be a little lower, allowing the mute to go farther into the bell.

New Tom Crown practice mutes, compared with other practice mutes, are very free blowing and very, very soft. This, plus excellent intonation, make them a great addition to the trumpet player's tools. These mutes are also ideal for very soft muted orchestral or solo passages that must be played softer than pianissimo. Endorsed by professional musicians, such as John Hagstrom, Gabriele Cassone, and Giuliano Sommerhalder.

Tom Crown 30TWW Trumpet Wah-Wah Mute
All Aluminum Wah-Wah Mute by Tom Crown.

The wah-wah mute is one of the most common mutes used by trumpet players of all levels – student, intermediate, and professional. Perhaps the must infamous example of the wah-wah sound is that which is produced by Miles Davis.

The mute you select should have good overall intonation, should be playable in all registers, should have good response at any dynamic level and have a characteristic muted sound—Tom Crown mutes are designed to provide all.

Wah-wah mutes tend to play sharper than straight mutes. Some wah-wah mutes are too small. They have insufficient interior volume to play well in the low register, often not being usable below low B-flat concert. Using the wah-wah mute without the stem, like Miles, also creates problems with some brands of mutes. One should be able to play to the low F# on the Bb trumpet with the stem-cup removed. An extra piece of brass or cardboard tubing, 1/4 to 3/4 inches long, to extend the interior tube of the mute, will help if the low register does not respond. Tom Crown wah-wah mutes are designed to fit most standard Bb or C trumpet bells. Some bell curves may make it difficult for the mute to stay in the trumpet — these wah-wah mutes that fall out can be treated by rubbing a very small amount of violin bow rosin on the corks.

Different types of metal definitely affect the mute’s tone quality and response, much as different metals used in a bell affect a trumpet’s tone quality and response. Tom Crown all-aluminum straights mute are bright-sounding, the brass-end mute is less-bright or somewhat dead, and the copper-end or the all-copper mute is dark in its tone.
